Retired teacher donates money from her pension to Kolkata doctors’ protest

A 76-year-old retired teacher from West Bengal’s Birbhum donated Rs 10,000 from her pension to the fund supporting the protest demanding justice for the doctor who was raped and killed at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College.
The retired teacher, Snehamoyee Sarkar, noted that it is necessary to raise enough funds to continue the protest without any hindrance.
“There is a lot of work involved in running a movement, and it requires a lot of money to sustain. Those boys and girls are continuously protesting day and night. They are trying their best. Now, how will they continue? How will it be possible? That’s why I decided to donate to their fund,” Sarkar told India Today.
The retired teacher said she did not want her donation to be made public, and it was revealed without her knowledge.
Commenting on the legal process, Sarkar further said, “Let there be a clear trial, and let her parents know. If there is a suitable punishment, it will reduce the pain a little.”
Snehamoyee Sarkar was a teacher at Tantipara Indian Textile Girls’ High School in Birbhum. She retired from her service in 2007 and currently resides in Shantiniketan along with her daughter.
A 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and killed inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Hospital on August 9. The incident sparked massive outrage, and doctors have been leading a protest in Kolkata since then, seeking justice for the victim as well as proper legislation and measures to ensure safety in their workplace.
Meanwhile, on Monday, after a meeting with a delegation of protesting doctors, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accepted most of the five-point charter of demands placed by the agitating doctors. Banerjee announced her decision to transfer a section of Kolkata Police and top brass of the state health department, including Commissioner of Police Vineet Goyal, from their respective positions.
